Age:
She claims to be 19.

Canon: FLCL [anime]
Pull Point:

Just after the final battle with Naota.

Background Info:
History:
Personality:

Haruka is best described as an eccentric person, she can change her demeanor from silly to serious at the drop of the hat and is seemingly able to adapt to any circumstance. This best seen in the contrast in her actions while at Naota's house in which she tends to be overly sexual and prone to goofy behavior such as giving impromptu lectures on the nature of rock and role or parading around the house wearing nothing but a towel. She seems to do this partly to get reactions out of other people, specifically Naota who is key to her plans. This also lends Haruko to a rather spontaneous nature that sees her making decisions without putting much thought into the process. In contrast, when she enters battle or is dealing with her enemies Haruko displays a strange sense of playful rage, mixing her usual of silliness with a desire to eliminate those who stand in her way..

One can also see a sense of seriousness in Haruka when one looks at her single minded obsession with gaining the power of the Pirate King, Atamosk. Indeed, Haruko first came to Earth in search of this mysterious being and everything she did upon arriving on the planet was in pursuit of Atamosk. From hitting Naota with her Vespa to waging war on Medical Machina, Haruko did it all in the name of claiming Atmosk's power for her own. This seems to be proven when Naota briefly fuses with Atamosk, an action which enrages Haruko and causes her to launch an attack on her former friend.

Haruko's other major personality trait is her ability to manipulate people to get what she wants. Haruko will entwine herself in the lives of others, pretending to be friendly and close to them as long as they can help her get closer to her goal. She will then proceed to use them until she has run the well dry, so to speak, and said person is no longer of use to her. They will then be cast aside like garbage. The biggest example of this is Naota, whom is the key to Haruko's plan to gain the power she seeks. She began by hitting Naota with her Vespa, then setting herself up as his family's housekeeper to be close to him. Slowly she built up a relationship with the young boy till the point where he seems to be in love with her, in fact, the last thing Naota said to Haruko before she left earth was “I love you”.

However wether Haruko ever actually harbored any feelings for the young boy is suspect and it seems she simply wanted to use the N.O. Space in his head to gain access to Atamosk. Haruko also tried a similar ploy with Naota's father, being she wanted to see if his head could be used as a N.O. Portal, but upon finding she could not, Haruko seemingly killed the middle aged man and dumped his corpse in a closet. She then constructed a robotic double of Naota's father and use it to insinuate that they were in a relationship. This served to further her plot for Naota as it caused him to become angry that anyone but himself was close to Haruko and forced his N.O. Space to activate on several occasions.

Finally, Haruko's favorite method of to further her goals seems to be her own very overt sense sexuality. Even in her relationship with Naota, Haruko uses sex and romance as a weapon. She constantly tells other people that she possess some kind of special relationship with Naota and seems to go out of her way to put herself into awkward positions with the boy, such as when she pinned him down, wearing nothing but a towel, and forced Naota to kiss her. She is also fond of phrases that sound rather sexual but seemingly have no meaning. These include muttering “mouth to mouth” and the repetition of the sound “Furi kuri” among other things. Eventually all this attention seems to get to Naota as he comes to believe he is in love with Haruko. Haruko also tempted Naota's father in a similar way, but after finding out he was worthless to her plan she promptly dismissed the relationship. The end of Haruko's relationship with Naota seems to sum up her feelings about the youth well. After Atamosk left Earth, leaving no reason for Haruko to stay there, she simply told Naota she was leaving. Though she briefly asked the youth if he wanted to come with her, she quickly rescinded the offer telling Naota to “never mind, your still a kid” and to “wait for next time”. This seems to show that Haruko developed an interest in Naota beyond his N.O. potential, but his childish nature prevented the pair from forming any sort of meaningful relationship at that time.

According to Commander Amuro, the one “person” Haruko truly loved was Atomsk, though this comment is without context. This comment is odd as Atosmk is not a human being perse, but rather an energy being that takes the form of a gigantic, red, bird. Love in this case my refer Haruko's love of power or something similar, rather then an romantic love.

Game Specific:
Arcana:
Devil

Justification:

The Devil arcana relates to excesses of pleasure and sexuality, both facets that fit Haruko well. Haruko's main goal in life is acquiring power, in this case the power of the Pirate King Atamosk, and displays a fanatical love of such power, as displayed when she fawned over Canti while he displayed Atomsk's power.

Haruko also uses her sexuality as a weapon to get what she wants, often playing with others emotions for long periods of time in pursit of a greater goal. The most blatent example of this being Haruko's extended efforts to get Naota to fall in love with her in order to aquire Atomsk's power for her own. In all, Haruko is a character who thrives on excess in many manners of her existance and will recklessly pursue these goals with little regard for others. This fits in well with similar traits that define the Devil Arcana.

Samples:
First Person Sample:
[Haruko's message is quick, brash, and a bit angry.]

Hey, Atosmk, I know you can hear me! What kinda dirty trick are you trying to pull here!? I finally get close to taking your power and you kick me back Earth? I'll give you an 8 for effort but a 2 for style...

[Knowing ranting will get her no where, Haruko quickly turns to other matters.]

Anyway, have any of you guys seen a Vespa Scooter sitting around anywhere? It's yellow with a big ol' “P!” sticker on it. If ya see it just tell me, and don't try to ride it. I don't think you want to find out what happens if you do~.

Third Person Sample:
It seems Haruko has grown impatient with the world around, without any small boys to torment or pirate kings to chase she has spent the past few nights stalking the recesses of the city, scaring small wild life and searching for something known only to the gods themselves. Tonight, however, her treasure hunt seems to have produced something other then dust and old rusted metal. With all her strength, which is quite a large amount, Haruko pulls upon the huge object hidden beneath a myriad of junk and rubble. With a final surge of strength, the object is finally reclaimed from its dusty tomb, falling to the ground with a mighty thud.

Haruko, after taking a second to catch her breath, steps back to take in the glory of her prize, a rusted out scooter, lacking a engine, fuel, or anything else for that matter. Picking her nose, Haruko voices her opinion on the vehicle before her “It's kind of a piece of crap, isn't it?”As if responding to her comment, the scooter falls over, its hollow innards rattling with debris. “But, beggars can't be choosers I suppose, time to get you home, you rusted piece of junk. I'm gonna fix you up and see if we can't run down a poor soul or two.” Haruko then proceeds to wheel her prize back to her room, smiling the whole walk there.

Wierd girls: A serial

ana
Welcome to the first day of a project of mine, twice a week I will be posting a original piece of fiction by me with the collective theme of "Wierd girls" These stories will range from short scenes to longer short stories and are tied together by the theme of existing outside of societies norms. In advance I thank you all for reading and hope you enjoy my first offering, the first chapter of my short story "An interview with God."

A story )

Anime Review Fall 2010 weeks one and two.

So it is the the beginning of a new season, which for most means the changing color of leaves and cool air. But, for anime fans it means the new crop of anime has finally come! This is all first impressions based on what little I've seen thus far, so bear with me.

Panty and Stocking With Garter
First off, this is the newest anime from Gainex, which of course carries a some expectations all by itself. Fans tend to love, FLCL or Gurran Laggen, or hate, dead leaves or some parts of Eva, Gainex and this anime follows that trend to a T.

Drawn in a western style, similar in many ways to that of the Power Puff Girls, the show is formatted much like something you would find on cartoon network. With each episode consisting of two 11 minutes segments. Fans seem to be split on the shows overly sexual and crude content and odd style, for the most part. Though this may change as more episodes are aired.

Content-wise, in the first episode we are introduced to the oversexed panty and her gothic-lolita clad partner Stocking. Following the command of a black preacher with an afro named Garter, they have to prove themselves worthy of getting back into heaven, having been kicked out for bad behavior, by cleaning up a city of various supernatural monsters. Quite an odd premise, to be sure. I won't spoil the shows most bizarre moment, but the girls' transformation scene is 100% Gainex.

Art/style 8/10
Story: 2/10
Voice Acting 7/10
Gothic Lolita fan-service 10/10
Overall 8/10

On a more otaku pandering level, we have "My little sister can't possibly be this cute" the story of a young man whose younger sister is a hard-core ero-game otaku and seems to have a fixation on little sisters in a whole.

The series is based on a light novel of the same name, continuing the trend that began with Haruhi in 2006 and continues through things like this and Baka To Test, an anime which I will discuss later. I will be interested to see if the series can continue to be cute without becoming a gigantic incest joke. On the positive side of things, the animation and character design are great and the show is the most colorful anime I've seen in quite some time.

Art 9/10
Story 6/10
Voice Acting 5/10
Implied Incest 10/10
Konata Index 10/10
overall 7/10

Last, but not least, we have Invasion! Squid Girl, an anime about a squid girl who emerges from the ocean to take over the world. But, do to her own incompetence ends up working at a beach shack instead. This is based on a 4 panel series and this is structured along the lines of series like Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh where each episode is split into sections based on a single comic strip. This leads to some odd pacing, but lets the show not linger on anyone subject as to bore the viewer.

As a lead, Squid girl is very amusing in a hyperactive way. Her boundless energy carries the first episode well and is well contrasted against the overly-serious sisters she works under at the beach-side restaurant.

However, the subject matter and gaggy nature of the anime may wear thing over time. Hopefully the series cuts off at 12 or 13 episodes before it wears out it's welcome like Excel Saga or Miami Guns did.

Art 5/10
Concept 8/10
Amusing quotient 8/10
tsundere squid score 10/10
Cute cosplay score 10/10 [I will totally be dressing up as her if the series continues to be good : )]
overall: 8/10 (Yes I rated it the same as Panty and Stocking, I have odd taste.]

As for old stuff I've been catching up on, lets hit the lightning round.

Aoi Hana: Sweet Blue Flower,
Super cute shojo ai series that is more realistic then most. The manga is by the same author as Wandering Son, which is getting an anime adaption in january. Good all-around but a bit slow by nature
9/10

Baka To Test
A light novel based comedy, it stands out from most school set comedies by basis of interesting character quirks. Also, everyone is gay for Hideyoshi-kun. A light hearted anime for those who don't want to think to much. It has been licensed for a January release via Funimation.
7/10

Key the Metal Idol
An old, 1994, anime about a girl who thinks she is a robot and her quest to become an idol singer. In the end, it actually becomes a bizarre tale of corporate espionage and the brutality of the Japanese pop music industry.

Interesting if odd, the series is overly serious at times and has moments of over the top exposition that leave me wondering why they didn't sprinkle the info throughout the serious, rather then blasting it into our face in the last two episodes.
6/10

Lovely Complex
A simple but enjoyable Shojo romance series, that somehow avoids most of the genre's tropes.
The simple art style might turn some people off, but those who stick around will enjoy.
8/10

Manga review: The Wandering Son

nitorin
Hello everyone, well Hoy and people reading this because of my RPing. Tonight, I wanted to talk about a relatively obscure manga that will soon be getting an English release.

The Wandering Son is the story of middle school student Shuiichi Nitori, whom very much wishes to be a girl. The plot of the series revolves around Shuiichi and his friends and they deal with life in middle school and later Jr High. If this was all the series had to offer, it would be lost in the sea of slice of life manga. The Wandering Son sets itself apart through its very realistic and honest portrayal of gender identity and the transgender condition. Shuichi, and later his friend Yoshisuki, a girl who wants to be a boy, explore their own gender through crossdressing, hair style and various other means. These incidents are never played for laughs or portrayed in any negative light, but rather are discussed in a way that lends emotional weight to the character's actions and makes you feel for them when things go awry, as they often do.

[Spoilers beyond this point.]

Emotion runs deep through the series and things in particular become tense when cross-gender aspects of its main characters come to light. A good example of this is shown when Shuiichi, on the suggestion of a friend, attends school dressed as a girl. Having figured since it was ok for Yoshiyuki, things would turn out OK. Highlighting the double standard related to gender specific clothing, Shuichi is sent to the nurse's office then sent home to deal with his parents' response. The whole debacle leads to Shuichi staying home from school for a month and questioning if it was really worth it to try and be a girl. Incidents like this highlight the pain of feeling you are the wrong gender and how hard it can make life.

Also notable is the series rather robust supporting cast, most of whom have more character development then an average character in a similar series. Varying between Makato, a young boy who at first believes himself similar to Shuichi but later admits he begins thinks he is gay, to the gloomy Saorin, whom is anti-social and only really opens up after a long period of being around Shuichi and the others. Characters actually work on their short comings and become better people over the course of the story.

So in summery, the Wandering Son is easily one of the best manga I have read in quite some time. It is the only manga, or comic for that matter, I know of that deals so well with the ideas of gender identity and what it means to be Transgender. If your looking for a good, character driven, story, give the Wandering Son a try. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The Wandering Son will be released in a English hard-cover edition in December of 2010. An anime adaption has also been green-lit.

[CHARACTER INFO]

CHARACTER NAME: Chii

FANDOM: Chobits

CHRONOLOGY: The end of the manga

CLASS: Hero

SUPERHERO NAME: Personacom

ALTER EGO: Elda Mutosuwa, bakery worker.

BACKGROUND:

In the world of Chobits, humanoid computers known as Persocoms have revolutionized the world as we know it. Aside from replacing traditional computer set ups, Persocoms have, in a slight way, changed the dynamics of human interaction. Many people have come to prefer Persocoms to “normal” people when it comes to relationships, a shift that affects most of the main characters in Chobits.

Chii's story began with a man named Ichiro Mahara, the president of Piffle Princess Inc, a toy company that produced a product known as Angelic Layer. This series of dolls could be controlled via ones mind when placed upon a special table. The technology to make these dolls were later spun off by Ichiro and his wife Chitose to produce a series of humanoid robots known as Persocoms. The most special of these robots were a pair named Elda and Freya. As Chitose could not have children on her own Ichiro produced Freya to act as the couples surrogate daughter. The three lived together as a happy family until an unfortunate incident in which Freya fell in love with her father. The pain of not being able to fufill this longing caused Freya to become sluggish and forgot things. To try and cheer up their daughter Ichiro and Chitose made her a sister named Elda. However, Freya's depression worsened until she finally contemplated “killing” herself. Elda stepped in a declared that if Freya did that she would loose all her happy memories of dad, mom, and herself. Freya agreed and instead uploaded her memories into Elda. Elda then, in order to avoid her sisters fate, had Chitose erase her memories and leave her in the trash so that she could find a special person for herself.

Elda was then found in said trash by a down on his luck prep schol student named Hideki Mutosuwa. Hideki, being a poor student who works at a small bar, is quick to pick up the abandoned Persocom and bring her home. After hours of fiddling with Elda, Hideki finds her on switch within the innards of her thighs and activates her. Upon waking up Chii is all the young android can say and as such Hideki assumes it is her name. Chii is soon discovered to be a special Persocom with massively encrypted data which leads Hideki's friends Shinbo and Minaoru to believe she is a legendary type of Persocom known as “Chobits”. Chii is slow to fit into her new life, having to be retaught every aspect of the world and encounters trouble such as declaring every item in Hideki's apartment to be named Hideki and the peril of finding panties. More seriously she attempts to find a job to help Hideki with his expenses and ends up on a internet strip show. When the shows director attempts to touch her where her on switch was Chii freaks out and destroys the building the show was housed in via a mysterious power.

With Chii safely home, her relationship with Hideki begins to grow. Despite insisting that she is only a machine, Hideki finds himself questioning what his feelings for Chii really are. Chii meanwhile becomes in contact with Freya within her as she becomes closer to Hideki. Freya questions Chii to if she had found her special someone and reveals something bad will happen if he rejects Chii. Chii also becomes more independent as she begins working at a local bakery part time. Unfortunately, one day while returning home from work, Chii is kidnapped by a hacker who had seen her via a posting on a message board made by Minoru. It is a bigger challenge to find Chii this time as Hideki but enlist the help of all of his friends to locate the hacker's house. Upon finding Chii, Hideki sees her again unleashing her special power and Freya speaks to him through Chii about the pairs relationship. The power surge also draws the attention of Zima and Dita, a pair of government android's tasked with shutting down Chii if anyone ever triggered her special skills. After the incident, Hideki learned the manager of the bakery where Chii works was at one time married to his persocom and begins to contemplate his relationship with Chii.

Chii's specialness comes full circle when Minoru manages to find a picture of Chii and Freya alongside

Chitose Hibiya, who just so happens to be Hideki's land lady. Hideki confronts Chitose about the picture and tells him the story about how her husband invented Persocoms and about Elda and Freya's past. Hibiya ask's Hideki how he feels about Chii but is interrupted when Chii's power is activated via Freya, resulting in Persocoms city wide blacking out. Hideki rushes to the roof to deal with her and ends up declaring he is indeed in love with Chii. Freya then takens over and asks Hideki if he still loves Chii even though there is something she cannot do for him. This turns out to be sexual intercourse as any contact would trip Chii's switch and reset her memories again. Hideki says he accepts he will never be able to do that with Chii as he cares to much about her to have her loose her memories over such a small matter. Freya then retreats back into Chii, satisfied her sister had found the person just for her.

PERSONALITY:

Chii for lack of a better term is naïve and innocent, as a newly awakened persocom she has no experience with the real world and thus will believe anything that is told to her. This resulted in a long period of time in which Chii was in danger simply leaving her owner, Hideki's home. She on multiple occasions has been kidnapped as a result of trusting the wrong person and has had to be rescued by her friends. Chii's lack of knowledge also meant she had to be taught anything and everything about life and the world around her. This means that if Chii encounters something for the first time she will most likely not know what the object or concept in question is and will quickly ask someone or try her best to fit the novelty into her rather limited world view. However, once Chii has learned something she will retain and recall the information perfectly the same can be said for learning new skills. Chii, at first, was an awful cook who tried to jam as many things into a stew pot as possible. But upon being shown how to do such a thing she was able to perfectly replicate the results afterwords.

Chii's innocent nature also makes Chii very personable, she tends to get along with everyone she meets and is quick to make friends. In fact, due to this Chii's greatest fear is being left alone like she was before Hideki found her. She questions Hideki in such matters if he will go away or leave her, which is often accompanied by Chii becoming depressed and make an expression as if she was crying. Chii's deepest desire is also bound to being around other people as she constantly expresses the concern if she will find “the person only for her”or not. Before actually finding this to be Hideki at the end of the series she worries if anyone can truly love her as she is a persocom and cannot fulfill all the wishes a human being may have of her. Finally, in this matter, Chii's ability to get along with other people has made her a very hard worker, as she feels she needs to help those around her and has found that by working she can make many people happy at once. Chii also works so that she can help support Hideki

and occasionally to be able to buy something she likes, such as new picture books.

Chii has a rather childish nature and her interests reflect this. Her favorite pastime is reading picture books or waiting at home for Hideki to come back to see her, lending her to be rather clingy once he does arrive home She also speaks in a simple manner, favoring short words and using her own name in place of personal pronouns.

[voice]

[Coming over the devices speaker is the voice of a young girl, her voice is full of sadness.]

Chii had never been away from Hideki and everyone for this long... It makes Chii's chest feel empty and head goes all shaky. Chii has never felt like this way before, my eyes want to leak water like Miss Yumi's but they can't because I'm a Persocom and not a person. There are no Persocoms like Chii or Sumomo here either. Chii is all alone again...

[Her speech becomes slow, as sadness becomes depression.]

Can some please tell Chii what these feelings are, why everything is so empty and the world seems so dark. Chii knows that If Hideki was here he would explain this to me and make everything right again. But things are not all right, Chii is here and not with Hideki. If anyone can make the empty leave, even for a little bit, please tell Chii...

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

standing out against the city's starry night-time skyline Chii stands atop a time worn building, her long hair flowing in the chilly winds of night. Despite the cold, the Persocom's face remains stoic and unchanging, a stark contrast to the chaos of the city below her. Behind her reflecting pool like eyes a thought stirs in her head, a thought of her own isolation and loneliness. It had been months since she had been dropped into a world far removed to her own, since she had been forced into the role of hero, and relegated to forever chasing criminals who possessed no regard for human life.

This was not Chii's life or better put its not the life she wanted, things were perfect back home, working at the bakery and waiting for her beloved to arrive to take her home. Thats how things were supposed to be, Chii thought shifting her pose to one of prayer, sending to heaven a wish to return things to the way they were before. However, in a moment the Chii's silent vigil is interrupted by a sound emanating from the city streets below. An alarm rings at a fevered pitch, giving notice of some petty criminal breaking into a local business. Chii knew what she had to do, for now this was her life, releasing a gentle sigh of “Chii...” Chii made her way to the streets below, gently floating like a leaf in an updraft. As she descends, like an angel of legend, a small sentence falls from her lips “Hideki...Chii is being a good girl, just like you taught Chii...”

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:

Canon: Serial Experiments Lain

Character: Lain Iwakura

Timeline: The time Lain confronts her Wired personality.

At the beginning of the series, Lain is portrayed as a slightly isolated and shy girl. She does not talk to many people at school, as shown when she only brings herself into her classmates discussion on a strange e-mail they received after being talked to first. When she does speak, Lain's speech pattern is also rather awkward, consisting of short sentences spoken at a very slow pace. She is also portrayed as being slightly childish for her age, as seen in her still wearing full body bear pajamas despite being in Jr. High and the fact that her Navi is one meant for small children. She also seems to have little interest in technology as she admits to her classmates she knows very little about the Wired or email and at home her Navi appears to be in a state of disuse, surrounded by various toys and school supplies. It seems that she is also would not be considered one of the “cool” kids as it is stated she often goes to bed early and has no interest in things like going out to clubs. In episode 2, Lain is seen sitting on her bed in her pajama starring into space, this seems to be her normal night time activity. However, when Lain does eventually decide to go to a club, to see what her classmates were doing, she wears several layers of brightly colored clothing, a stark contrast to the tight tops and short skirts her classmates are wearing.

This trip to club Cyberia is also something of a trigger for Lain as it marks the first appearance of her alternate personality in the real world, she appears when a drugged up club goer turns a gun on several people and then Lain who shouts at him, in a sharp contrast to how she acted even moments before, “Everyone is connected” which causes the gunman to turn his weapon on himself. This incident is also important as during the police interrogation afterward we see one of Lain's classmates, a girl named Alice, show actual concern for Lain's well being. This would prove to be important as Lain eventually grows to consider Alice her best friend.

Outside of school and her classmates Lain's family seems for the most part to be uninterested in their daughter's affairs. Lain's mother does not speak to her even when Lain directly asks her questions. On the other hand Lain's father pays some attention to her, such as helping her order a new Navi when Lain asks for one or when he shows concern that Lain should make some new friends. However, his interest in Lain often seems to be cautionary as most of her father's chats with Lain are often some kind of warning. Such as telling her not to confuse the Wired and the real world or to tell her he is worried Lain is no longer herself. Lain's sister, Mika, seems to be the most normal person in the Iwakura family and regards her little sister as being a bit strange. Lain relationship with her family is not helped by the fact that she is often left home alone after school. We see Lain checking each room of her house with what seems like a hope that someone will be there to interact with her. Failing to find anyone to connect with at home Lain turns to the Wired for interaction.

She is apparently a quick study as by episode 4, one episode after she first logged into the Wired, Lain has some how acquired a working knowledge of how to take apart and customize computers. With this knowledge comes a shift in Lain's personality, she seems to be much more social the before. Her speaks more quickly and in greater amounts and begins conversation with people without being spoken to first. She also goes out when her classmates ask her but afterwards runs home to continue

working on her Navi. Her Navi has become a kind of obsession by this point and now takes up her entire room. As her Navi expands so it seems does her other personality, by this time we see Lain's face appearing on television screens in downtown and her voice can be heard in places she is not physically present, such as in club Cyberia.

The strengthening of her Wired persona seems to have adverse effects on Lain's real life, as she begins spending less time with her friends and more time in the Wired. She even begins bringing a hand-held Navi to class to keep track of whats going on in the Wired when she is not at home. It seems that all of this net use has cut into Lain's sleep as she is seen with heavy eye lids and in class seems unable to keep herself awake. This behavior worries Alice who seeks out Lain on their school's rooftop, finding her crouching on the ground crying. Alice seems to think Lain has been reverting to her old, unsocial self and wishes she would start going out with herself and her friends again. Lain says she had fun being around Alice and is glad they're friends.

This seems to calm down Lain for a bit but she soon is shocked again when she is confronted by men from Tachibana labs upon coming home from school. The men take Lain to their boss, who is an unnamed executive in the company. He asks a series of questions, including if Lain and Lain of the Wired really are the same person and if Lain's parent's are her real parents. This leaves Lain crying on the floor with a kind of existentialist crisis. She could not answer any of his questions, she did not know her parent's birthday or even if they had even celebrated a birthday in her family ever. The stress of such a realization brings Wired Lain to the surface who responds to all of the man's questions with “Who cares?! None of this matters anyway.”

Once back at home, Lain tells her parent's what the man from Tachibana said and attempts to laugh the incident off by saying it was all really silly. Her parent's in turn give no response, an action which fills Lain with uncertainty about her own identity. Making matters worse, at school a rumor has been going around that Lain has been watching people and spreading their secrets online, many people call her a “peeping tom.” This causes everyone in school to stare at Lain and make her very depressed, in this state Lain calls out to Alice for help. But more importantly one of the rumors that had been spread on the net is that Alice is dating one of her teachers. Alice at first does not believe that Lain spread the rumor because their friends and she would never do something like that to a friend. This trust is quickly broken as that night Alice finds Wired Lain sitting on her bed watching her as she fantasizes about her teacher. Wired Lain giggles in a evil manner at the sight, while the Lain of the real world lies in her bed screaming in fright of what is going on. Real Lain attempts to confront her Wired self and repeatedly yells that they are not the same person and that she would never hurt Alice like that. While Wired Lain maintains they are in fact the same being and when Lain tries to choke her laughs and says “Look at me! I'm committing suicide!” Upon finishing this exchange with herself, Lain becomes even more depressed and spends the next episode sitting alone in her room starring into space.. It is also in the dregs of her depression that Lain meets “God.”

The being calling itself “God” was once a scientist named Eri Marihara who inserted his personality into the newest version of the Wired's Protocol and thus becoming a kind of digital “god.” Eri claims that he created Lain's physical body and set her up with a fake family, he even goes as far as to say that Wired Lain is the real lain and her current incarnation was nothing but a puppet he created. Wired Lain manages to argue with Eri but “God's” speech effects her real world counter part in a big way, leaving her even more depressed then when all this started. She begins to question if she was ever meant to exist in the real world and begins imagine voices telling her she is no longer needed. Lain also seems to loose her last links to reality as her family has left her behind and reveal they were never her real family and were only acting the part. Though, her father says that though he did not like playing house he felt a real bond with Lain and will always love her.

Left questioning if she should even exist and devoid of any sort of friends or family to bind her to the real world Lain sits in her room in a completely sullen state in which she does not speak or move. She has also attached wires to herself for some reason. In this state Lain plays over the events that got her to this point in her mind, remembering her family, friends, and her encounter with Eri. Near the end of these visions Lain seems to focus on Alice, in fact during a montage of Alice's encounters with Lain the words “A loving heart is searching for you” flash on screen for a moment. It seems as if, even now, Lain holds Alice in a position of high regard. This is also seen when Lain attempts to fix her fractured relationship with Alice by erasing everyone's memories of her dating her teacher. In her current state it seems like Lain believes people would be better off if they could just forget the bad things that happen to them. Her logic being if no one remembers an event it never happened. However, this only serves to hurt Alice more as she wonders why Lain did not erase her memories to. Despite all this eventually Alice goes Lain's house to sort things out.

Alice is shocked by the the state of Lain's house, things are strewn all across the floor and everything is dirty as if it had not been washed in months. She eventually comes to find Lain in her room buried underneath a pile of wires, Lain quickly responds to Alice's presense and tells her that she was the only friend she ever had with out “Connecting” to her, a possible response to that their relationship was not founded on the Wired or any similar device. Lain even goes as far to tell alice that she loved her. Alice is scared of what is going on but is able to maintain enough composure to tell Lain to tell her that she does still need a body and shows this fact by telling Lain that despite her condition her body is still warm, proving that she is still alive and human. This elicits a rather violent reaction from Eri, who realizes that his plan will fail if he looses Lain now. Eri once again claims to have created Lain's physical body and that without him she would be nothing. Lain counters with the fact that she believes Eri could never really be a god because all he had done was connect people without the need for devices, he did not in fact come to this conclusion himself, he got it from others. In fact, Lain claims there may have always been a god somewhere and it was only waiting for something like the Wired to come about to make itself known to people and that without a body Eri could never understand this. Eri attempts to manifest himself in the real world and ends up creating a horrid creature made of tentacles and eyes. The Eri monster attacks Lain and Alice but is quickly buried by the computer equipment surrounding Lain's room.

Lain apologizes for the problems she has caused everyone and erases herself and Eri from existence. This seems to make the world a better place as her fake family now lived a normal existence, Alice's rumor had never spread, the men working under Tachibana worked normal jobs. In all, the world seems like a better place without Lain in it. Meanwhile, in a state of non-existence Lain questions what to do with herself by speaking with her Wired side. Wired Lain suggests acting as a god saying “It wouldn't take much, you'd just have to sit and watch.” Lain rejects this and tells her other half she sounds just like Eri. Lain attempts work out her problems by having tea with a facsimile of her father. Finally, Lain settles on spending her time watching over the person who mattered to her most, Alice. The series ends with Lain greeting a 22 year old Alice and saying they can see each other any time now.

In conclusion, Lain's character arc brings her through a complex array of personality changes. A character who began as a simple, shy girl with slightly childish trappings changed as she discovered the Wired and began to reach out to the people around her. This proved to be both positive, as it allowed her to make contact with Alice and others, but also negative and it consumed her life and gave power to her more aggressive Wired persona. Eventually Lain became unable to deny that her Wired personality not only existed but acted independently of her own wishes. This, combined with the questioning of the Tachibana executive, caused Lain to question who she was and what role she played, if any, in the world around her. When her Wired personality destroyed Lain's relationship with Alice and her fake family left her, Lain was left with no one left to turn to, leaving her ripe to be taken advantage of by Eri Marihara. She serves as the Mad God's pawn in breaking down the wall between the real and Wired worlds. Lain seemed to think she was nothing but a tool to be used, Eri refers to her as a piece of software. It took the love, so to speak,of Alice to convince Lain that she needed a body and was a human being, not a machine or piece of software. However, seeing the problems she had caused Lain chooses to remove herself from the world and everyone's memory. It seemed a hard decision as after removing herself from the world she was very depressed and had no idea what to do with herself. Despite having the power of a god, Lain still has the emotions and feelings of a human being after all. Thus we see when she refuses to become a omniscient god and rather selfishly decides to watch over a single person, Alice, instead that she is being a bit selfish and that rather then be distant and cold as a god, she wants, instead to be close to someone who makes her feel happy. A very human response to her problems.

A word should also be put in for Lain's other personality, the ever rude and hard headed Lain of the Wired. First appearing in Club Cyberia telling a drug addict to “we're all connected!” Wired Lain is the polar opposite of her real world counter part. While Real World Lain is shy and reserved, this Lain is rude, loud, and very upfront about what she wants. Examples of this include her yelling at the various authority figures around her, such as the men from Tachibana and Eri Marihara. Wired Lain's relentless drive and upfront nature can also be seen in the fact that she has excellent information gathering skills.

Even without using her powers, Lain was able to find information related to such esoteric information as finding the creator of a secret project related to research into psychic energy and eventually was able to find and leak on the net the identity of every member of the mysterious group known as the Knights.

These skills have made her something of a legend in the Wired and give her a cool and mysterious aura that her real world self could never hope to achieve.

Asides from gather information, Wired Lain also has less respectable hobbies. The most prominent being her watching people through the Wired then spreading what she learns online. This rather vile practise, for a time, ruined Lain's relationship with her best friend Alice and sent her careening towards an identity crisis that left her wondering if she even was meant to exist in the real world at all. In other words, despite being the same person as her counter part, Wired Lain seems to get some kind weird pleasure from hurting her other half.

In all Wired Lain's existence is best summed up by something Real World Lain said while confronting her net-borne counter part, when she asked why she embodied the parts of herself that she hated. In effect Wired lain acts in a manner that her other half would never dream of except in her darkest moments. In effect Real World Lain and Wired Lain are two sides of the same being, it seems Lain's extended time in the Wired along with the tampering of the knights allowed Wired Lain to take on an life of her own.

Background:

In the near future, the current internet has become strained and unable to handle current levels of traffic. To remedy this predicament scientists working with Tachibana Multinational created what became known as the 7th protocol. A program that would let the network handle a nearly limitless amounts of information and users. Secretly, Eri Mahara, a programmer at Tachibana, inserted his own memories, personality, and other data into a hidden layer of the protocol. To complete his plan, Eri committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train. The purpose of this was to free him of his physical body and allow his total freedom within the Wired. Acting as a kind of god within the network, Eri gathered followers in the form of a group of hackers known as the Knights. The Knights of the Eastern Calculus, the groups full name, are dedicated to what they call the “One Truth”, the fact that there is a god in the Wired and that he is Eri Mahara. They also seek to break down the barrier between the real world and the Wired, connecting humans beings without the use of a computer or other terminal.

The knights, and by extension Eri, are in conflict with Tachibana, whose unnamed Executive wants to scrub Eri from the network and set things back to normal. To this end, both groups monitor a young girl named Lain, who is believed to be the key to the wall between the real and the digital. It is unknown how Lain came to exist in the real world, however Eri claims to have created the physical body she possess and in a flash back the Men In Black who work under Tachibana, are seen introducing Lain to her foster family. Despite these unknowns, we do know that at the beginning of the series Lain is living as a normal school girl in a normal jr. high school.

Lain's life begins to veer towards the strange when a girl in her class commits suicide, claiming she wants to leave the physical world behind and that in the Wired there is a god. The next day at school a rumor begins to spread that the dead girl has been sending E-mails from the other side. Lain seems intrigued by this and once arriving home asks her dad to buy her a new computer as she “wanted to talk to a friend.” The computer system, made by Tachibana, is soon delivered to Lain and thus begins her strange decent into the world of the Wired.

Meanwhile, at school, Lain makes friends with a girl in her class named Alice. Alice saw that Lain was depressed and lonely and invites her to tag along with her group of friends as they go to a dance club. While at the club a man takes an illegal drug known as accelo, a type of neuro stimulant, and turns a gun on several club goers. Lain confronts the man and yells at him “we are all connected!” For some reason this causes the man to turn the gun on himself and pull the trigger. This is also the first appearance of Wired Lain on screen.

Back at home, Lain begins to upgrade her computer, which slowly grows to engulf her entire room in a sea of monitors and cooling fans . Using the massive rigs power Lain explores the world of the Wired, and becomes something of a legend on the network as a girl who can do almost anything. On top of this, Lain begins to hear and see things that may or may not be real. These include seeing ghost like beings and hearing voices claiming to be god. As her net legend spreads, Lain becomes isolated in the real world, leading Alice to become worried about her friend, claiming Lain seems to different then she was before. Lains spreading influence on the Wired also leads to her being targeted by the Knights, who actually plant a bomb within Lain's room.

In response to the Knight's attack Tachibana's men in black finally make a move as well. They take Lain to their employer, a Executive of the Tachibana company, who asks Lain a few very important questions. These being “are you the one and only Lain? And “Are those people you live with really your parents?”Unable to answer either, Lain becomes uneasy with her own existence, and wonders exactly who she is, as they cause the Lain of the Wired to once again surface in the real world, who insults both the MiBs and the Tachibana employee on her way out. .

This encounter leads Lain to question her own existence and have a kind of mental break down as she becomes aware of what her Wired personality has been doing without her knowledge. The biggest of these problems involves Wired Lain's spreading of peoples secrets on the Wired, including the fact that Lain's best friend, Alice, was dating one of her teachers. This causes people as school to avoid Lain as well as to call her a “Peeping Tom”. Despite this, Alice tells Lain that she believes she did not spread the rumors because Lain is her friend. Soon, Wired Lain destroys this bond by appearing in Alice's room and watching her while she fantasied about being with her teacher. This breaks Lain's friendship with Alice and forces her to confront her other self. This split drives Lain further into depression and makes her question who she is even more. Making matter's worse Lain's family has left her, having been a fake family set up for her. Despite her father saying he did actually love her Lain falls into a very deep depression which is a moment that Eri Marihara, the so called “God of the Wired” choose to make his appearance.

In confronting Lain, Eri suggests she go along with his plan as he is the only one who has ever loved her and that her human life has been a lie, in that he had created her human body and set her up with a fake family. This scene seems to shock Real World Lain out of submission and cause her Wired personality to take over and reject Eri's claims. Even though she survives the encounter, Lain is left even worse to wear, finding herself questioning if she even was supposed to exist in the real world in the first place. She begins hallucinating scene's of herself at school, where no one acknowledges her presense and ignore her completely. While Wired Lain wanders the streets of the city, seeing the phantoms of the Wired roam the real world as the two worlds meld together, her real world counter part lays in her room ,unmoving, under a pile of wires.

In an attempt to makes things better ,Lain, goes about trying to correct the mess she had made in Alice's life and once again deletes the rumors of her relationship from everyone's memory. Lain seems to believe that if people want to be happy they have to rid themselves of all of their unhappy memories. Alice sees this as wrong and goes to tell Lain how she feels. Arriving at Lain's house, Alice finds Lain lies buried under a pile of wires in her room. Lain, in a very dreamy state, contends that she no longer needs a body in addition to tell Alice she has always loved her and that she was her only friend. Alice responds by saying that Lain does need her body as she is a human being, and proves this by letting Lain feel the beating of her heart. This seems to resonate with Lain as she giggles along with Alice as the two girls felt each others heart beat. However this joy is short lived, as the two are interrupted by Eri, who freaks out over Lain's observation that without a body he will never truly be a god as he is not omnipotent as the idea of merging the two realities was not his own and thus he was not a god because he still relied on the ideas of others..

This causes Eri to go berserk and create a monstrous body for himself out of an unknown material. The strange beast attacks the girls but eventually falls silent under a pile of machinery and computers. With Eri dead, Lain decides the world would be better off without her and erases every trace of herself and Eri from the world and peoples memory. This seems to alter the world for the better, as Alice as her friends are living a normal life, the Men in Black now work as telephone repairmen, and her mom and dad are living as a normal married couple. Only Alice and Taro have vague memories they once knew a girl named Lain.

Finally, in another dimension, Lain contemplates what to do with herself. Her other self, the Lain of the Wired, suggest acting as a god, given her power. Lain rejects this and attempts to find the answer herself, eventually settling on watching over her friend Alice. The series ends with Lain encountering an adult Alice, who seems to still be with the teacher she was dating in jr high and now works as a teacher herself.

Abilities/Additional Notes:

Lain's true identity is that of a program meant to break down the wall between the Wired and the real world. Because of this role, lain has the following powers. She is able to project her consciousness anywhere connected via the network and observe what is going there while remaining invisible, she can edit and erase the memories of those around her, and can enter the Wired without use of a Net-Navi. As most of these powers are game breaking, her net related skills would be shut off due to the absence of the Wired in Adstring and her memory related powers would most likely not be used as well. I would keep the fact that Lain will sometimes slip into her Wired personality under stress, however.

Sample Journal Post:

[Sitting alone in her windowless room, Lain sits on the ground. Her voice is slow and deliberate, something heavy seems to be weighing on her soul.]

“H...Hi everyone... I had a question, if you wanted to answer it... Has there ever been something living in the network here? I'm asking because at home there was another me, who only existed in my world''s network. She did awful things to other people and I couldn't do anything about! I...I'm worried she could do the same thing here...

Sample RP:

Just another day under the bleak skys of Adstringendum, Lain sits just outside her room, basking in the light of an unearthly sun. However, today something is different about this shy little girl. For you see today, Lain's mind is not her own, a maligent force now sits in the front of her mind, its claws poised to make a grab at the world around her. As her eyes intently stare into the blank vista's of the wasteland, a rather rough voice emerges from Lain's young lips “So, it seems this place is free of any trace of the Wired. That is a pity, I was hoping to do a bit of snooping around this place as well.” As the words float from Lain's mouth to the crisp morning air a light sigh accompanies them, a seeming statement of Lain's boredom with the world around her. Then, in an attempt to rid herself of the monster known as boredom, Lain raises to her feet, stretching her arms to the heavens as if to challenge the gods themselves.

With this motion something falls to the ground before the young goddess, with further inspection it seems to be her PCD. Lain looks at the device with a devilish grin dominating her face. “What is this we have here, a Navi perhaps?” A quick look over the device from every angle seems to destroy this theory. “No, this is not powerful enough to be called a Navi, the network it is a connected to is far to small compared to that of the Wired.” With those words, a new connection forms in Lain brain, a vile connection only those with a hint of insanity could make. “So, there is a network blanketing this wasteland. And, people leave their information on it...” Lain's eye widen at the implications of all this then laughs to herself, it's a low laugh as if she does not want others to hear...

Timeline:Around the time Lain finds out her Wired personality had been spreading people's secrets on the net and begins to question exactly who the real Lain is.

Personality:

Lain actually has two separate personalities, one being the good or real world Lain and the other being the bad or Wired Lain. I'm going to describe both, since it helps to understand the mental crisis Lain goes through for most of the series.

The lain in the real world is a rather shy girl with few friends who spends most of her time alone in her room. She seems to have trouble relating to other people and has a obsessive interest in computers and technology. Due to her lack of friends she often substitutes talking to people on the Wired, Lain's version of the internet, for actual social interaction. Despite these qualities, Lain is a very polite girl when around other people and will go out of her way to make sure she does not do or say anything odd. This is later revealed to be a kind of self defense mechanism, as Lain does not wish to arouse suspicion that there is anything strange about herself. Internally, Lain's biggest fear seems to being left alone, she constantly repeats the phrase “we are all connected” when alone and seems to slip into depression when she has not interacted with people in some form, electronic or in person. This fear seems to diminish for a time as Lain becomes friends with a girl named Alice. Alice seems to be the factor that, for a time, causes Lain to open up and become more social. During the period of their friendship Lain goes out for lunch and to clubs with her friends, and seems happy.

This happiness is short lived as Lain eventually breaks under the pressure of her own identity issues. After her friends tell Lain they saw a girl who looks just like her at club Cyberia, Lain at first dismisses it as someone who looked like her, but it starts to affect her mentally as rumors spread on the Wired of a girl who looks like Lain watching people in their rooms. Lain maintains there is only one Lain, and there can't possibly be another of herself. However, she eventually finds that somehow another Lain exists in the Wired and somehow is acting independently of herself. This fact terrifies Lain, as it forces her to consider whether she is the “real” Lain or not. In truth, Lain's fear is well founded, as the Lain in the real world was created to placate Lain and to keep her from doing anything destructive via the Wired. For a moment Alice ties Lain to the physical world, however, Lain still believes the world would be better off without her and deletes memories of herself from the minds of everyone who knew of her. After doing this and becoming depressed due to being totally alone in the world, Lain dedicates herself to watching over her friend Alice and seems to have found a purpose for her existence.

The Lain of the Wired is in every way the opposite of her real world counterpart. In the real world Lain is kind and introverted, while on the Wired she is aggressive and often goes out of her way to harm other people for her own amusement. This Lain often frequents the nightclub known as Cyberia and attends the various raves and dances that are held there, in one such encounter the Wired Lain confronts a gun wielding man who had taken a techno-drug that affects one's brain and reaction time. She tells the man that “we are all connected” and causes him to commit suicide, later Lain shows no remorse for this action. The Wired Lain's main hobby seems to be collecting information on the Wired, she spends time tracking various urban legends of the network including those regarding the KIDS experiment and the legendary hacker group known as the Knights. She seems to collect this information only to hurt others as she eventually leeks a list of the members of the Knights to various online new sources. This allows a group working in opposition to the Knights to track down and eliminate everyone on the list. It is also notable that the real world Lain will slip into her Wired personality when threatened or confronted by a situation she cannot deal with.

Wired Lain is also known to to be something of a voyeur. She uses her omnipresence on the Wired to spy on people through the their computer, then spread their secrets all over the network. She normally does this in secret, but actually appears in person before Alice to taunt her with the knowledge that she fantasizes about her teacher. Lain then spreads this information all over Alice's school, which not only hurt Alice's reputation but also painted Lain as a peeping tom. This event causes Lain finally admit that her evil half exists as a personification of all the awful parts of her personality, but is unable to destroy her it would mean destroying herself. In a way, the Wired Lain seems to be a representation of people who form a secondary identity online and how on occasion this personality takes on a life of its own.

To remedy this predicament scientists working with Tachibana Multinational created what became known as the 7th protocol. Eventually, Lain's online activities begin to spread to the real world, when it is claimed Lain has been spying on people and posting their secrets online. Lain at first denies this fact but it is later revealed that it was in fact Lain's malicious online alter-ego that had been leaking the secrets, including that fact that her friend Alice had been in a relationship with a teacher at her school. After discussing her own nature with Eri, Lain discovers that she has a degree of control over the real world and the minds of the people within it. Lain alters the memories of everyone but Alice to make it seem as if her secrets had never come out. The use of her powers on the real world causes more copies of herself to appear in the Wired, as shown when many dummy like versions of Lain are shown while she talks with enters the wire to speak with “god”.

In the Wired, that version of Lain continues to search for information on the Knights and is led to a boy named Taro, whom she had met earlier at club Cyberia. She asks Taro to come over and explain anything he knew about the Knights and a mysterious computer chip she had been given by Cyberia's DJ. Upon reaching Lain's room, Taro admits he was a junior member of the Knights, though they did not tell him what their master plan was. He also explains the chip Lain received was made by the Knights and contained a program that could alter human memory. It seemed possible the Knight's were trying to bring Lain back in line because she had became wise to their operations.

It is now that Eri finally makes himself known to Lain, Suggesting she go along with his plan as he is the only one who has ever loved her and that her human life has been a lie. Lain rejects Eri's plan and in retaliation says he will only be a god as long as people worship him, in this case the knights. On the wired, Lain manages to find a list of current members of the Knights and leaks it to the media, leading to the Men in Black murdering several of its members and the rest committing suicide. With the Knights gone, Lain claims that Eri has no one left to worship him and thus is powerless. Eri contends in turn that one person, Lain, still believes in him and goes on with his plan to merge reality and the Wired.

Lain, on the other hand, goes about trying to correct the mess she had made in Alice's life and once again deletes the rumors of her relationship from everyone's memory. This seems to resonate with Lain as she giggles along with Alice as the two girls fealt each other's heart beat.

I would like keep the fact that Lain will sometimes slip into her Wired personality under stress, however.

[Clutching her PCD to her chest, Lain shivers in the cold night air of Adstring. Surrounded by encroaching darkness, loneliness and greif takes grip over her heart. She reaches out for help the only way she really knows how, by sending a message out over what she believes to be the Wired. Her hands shake as she types.]

“If anyone out there can read this, my name is Lain Iwakura. I...I think I'm lost, it's dark everywhere and none of the street lights are working. I'm not sure what is going on, I was at my terminal, but now I don't know where I am. If anyone know where I am, please tell me soon, it getting scary out here... ”

Sample RP:

Lain sits alone upon her bed, her face sporting a vacant look, as if her mind lie somewhere else. To most people it would seem this small girl had not slept for days, but the truth lie far deepe Within her own psyche, Lain, fights a loosing battle with questions of a deeply philosophical nature. In her seeming trance, a low, monotone, voice floats through Lain's head like leaves in a fall breeze. “Lain is Lain, right?” The voice echoes through Lain's mental landscape, its tone seem to say it is unsure of its own existence. Soon, another voice joins the corus, its tone much harsher the the first.

“But, I'm Lain as well. If we're both Lain, wich one of us is real?”

“I am... I think so anyway. I mean I wouldn't do anything bad to anyone like you do!”

“Do you really believe that? That you are capable of doing no wrong? How deluded you must be to believe something like that. Your so pathetic Lain...”

“I...I...I'm not pathetic I have friends here...”

“Really? What does it matter? In the end, you'll just end up hurting them. Remember Alice? That will happen over and over again until no one is left. You'll always be alone Lain. It's just your nature, our nature...”

After a moment the voices in Lain's head fall back to the void from whence they came, leaving Lain by herself in the empty room. Silently, Lain rolls onto her back, eyes pointed towards the ceiling, tears rolling down the her face like waterfalls.
